Subtitle
Independente, jornal político, literário, comercial, dedicado aos interesses da província de Cabo Verde was the first non-official newspaper of the archipelago, published at Praia, Santiago, from 1877 to 79. Among its collaborators counted on Joaquim Maria Augusto, a great satirist, and Barreto and Guilherme Dantas, who exposed prejudice and snobbery. With its own liberal typography, the newspaper strongly criticized the colonial administration, which led to the emergence of the Correio de Cabo Verde (1879), an informative, political and literary weekly dedicated to the province's interests. Apparently, it maintained some regularity during its existence. When it ceased publication, the same group of collaborators published Echo de Cabo Verde in 1880.
