Boletim do Arquivo Histórico de Macau

Arquivos de Macau: boletim do Arquivo Histórico de Macau [Archives of Macau: report of Macau's Historical Archive] were a notorious initiative, in every single way. A monthly publication, it aimed for the transcription of "every document of historical interest of each region that existed in the city's archives, as well as those of the same kind, which could be obtained, through copies or original versions, in other archives and libraries of Portugal, colonies or abroad." They began to be published in 1929, started by Telo de Azevedo Gomes, teacher of Macau's High School. As this teacher returned to the mother country, this magazine got interrupted. A new series emerged, directed by António Morais Sarmento, which, due to the beginning of Second World War, had a very short publishing duration. Under the action and influence of Luís Gonzaga Gomes, Isaú Santos and Maria Helena Évora, the Arquivos were extended until 1988. Particularly significant was the transcription of the main published newspapers in the 19th century in Macau, as well as fundamental documents to the understanding of local history.
