Bilingual newspaper (Portuguese, English), founded on July 8, 1886, in Bombay, by Leandro Mascarenhas (editor for Portuguese sections) and José da Silva (editor English sections). The creation of this newspaper is related to a complex moment for the Goan community in Bombay. On the one hand, the community felt the need to define its status within the British Empire as a reaction to the first meeting of the Indian National Congress which was then preparing vast political changes in the Raj. On the other hand, there was the desire to take a stand against the ‘Concordata' of June 23, 1886, between Portugal and the Vatican, whose consequences for the Goan clergy were vividly felt and debated inside and outside Goa. During its long existence, the newspaper was always connected to the Goan communities scattered throughout India and in other spaces of the British and Portuguese Empires. Although this newspaper followed events in British India, and, later, in independent India as well, it has always been mainly focused on the interests of the Goan community and its political life, intervening in controversial social issues and troubled moments.
As a Catholic newspaper, it actively opposed the First Republic, and was banned in Goa between December, 1911, and June, 1914. In the early years of the Estado Novo, it stood alongside its opponents, condemning the Acto Colonial (Colonial Act). Because of that public position, the Portuguese diplomacy target the newspaper and it was banned in Goa, during the years that followed the publication of the Constitution of the Salazar regime and again in 1937. On the other hand, in the last years of its existence, it was strongly criticized, and its facilities suffered an assault by Goan nationalists in exile, who accused the publication of convergence with Salazar's positions on the "Goa Problem". It ceased on March 19, 1955, probably due to the impact of this pressure within independent India.
