Pereira, Nuno Teotónio, 1922-2016

Lisbon, 30 January 1922 – Lisbon, 20 January 2016. Nuno Teotónio Pereira was an architect associated to public housing architecture. He also created a movement for the renewal of religious art (1952). Politically, he was one of the leaders of the group of Progressive Catholics that since the 1960s opposed the Estado Novo dictatorship through different public and clandestine initiatives and publications, having also a clear anticolonial positioning, namely through the promotion vigils for peace and the foundation of the BAC. Such activity led to his arrest for four times, being subjected to torture during his last stay in prison. After the Carnation Revolution, he continued a political and civic activity. On occasion of his centenary, a group of citizens and family members created a website dedicated to him and with a look at the present situation of the projects and causes in which he was involved.
