Mascarenhas, Leandro, 1862-1909

Calangute (?, Goa), 27 Oct. 1862- Bombay, 26 Dec. 1909. He belonged to a family from Calangute, but it is uncertain were was born. Although being an important member of the Goan Catholic comunity in Bombay, there is little biographic information about him. He was a journalist, entrepeneur and a Cathollic and social activist. Before starting the pro-Padroado newspaper O Anglo-Lusitano, the most lasting Goan Catholic newspaper in Bombay, was a assistent editor of the pro-Propaganda Fide newspaper A India Catholica (Bombay). For his work in favour of the Padroado, he was made knight of the Order of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Vila Vicosa. He was a founding member of the Instituto Luso-Indiano (1883) and the União Goana (1903), and was an elected member of the India's section of the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa. Was also founding partner of the Indian Cooperative Navigation and Trade Company (February 1909).
