Fonseca, Viriato Gomes da, 1863-1942

Ribeira Grande, Island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde, 13 December 1863 - Paço de Arcos, Portugal, 26 February 1942. He was an engineer by the Escola Politécnica in Lisbon, having been a military with a career in Africa and in Portugal. He became the only African to become a General in the Portuguese army. Being a notable speaker and a member of the Portuguese Republican Party, he was elected to the parliament during the republic. Alongside he was an inventor, painter, musician and journalist, having contributed to several periodicals published in Cape Verde and in Portugal.
