Exposição Virtual Comum

A Exposição Virtual Comum visa evidenciar o interesse de Bibliotecas, Arquivos e Investigadores pensarem cooperativamente investigação, preservação e acessibilidade das colecções de imprensa periódica colonial, em termos nacionais e internacionais. Reflexão e posicionamento que a Organização do Congresso “Política e Cultura na Imprensa Periódica Colonial” considerou suficientemente importante para ter reservado um dia do Congresso a um "Encontro Bibliotecas, Arquivos e Investigadores: um debate internacional" a partir da ideia chave "arquivo virtual comum".

No que respeita a salvaguarda e acesso actuais, a realidade remete-nos para um panorama de títulos difíceis de detectar, colecções em avançado estado de deterioração devido à fragilidade do papel e aos condicionalismos de afectam a sua conservação. Acresce estarem frequentemente dispersas por países, instituições e particulares cujo mapeamento importa realizar. A extrema fragilidade, dispersão, deficiente conhecimento das colecções por parte das instituições e mesmo a invisibilidade desse arquivo nos seus catálogos, dotam de particular sentido agir cooperativamente, quando os recursos são notoriamente limitados. A ideia é optimizar esses recursos e encontrar soluções para conhecer, preservar, unir e devolver virtualmente patrimónios e histórias reconhecidos como próprios e comuns.

Cabe reconhecer que na imprensa periódica (jornais, revistas, boletins, etc) se encontra reflectida e intelectualmente construída parte significativa da história contemporânea dos países que até aos processos de independência integraram o "mundo colonial" (metrópole, colónias) criado pelo império português. Tal é aplicável aos espaços em que pôde florescer e, por omissão que exige reflexão, àqueles onde não pôde desenvolver-se. Podemos mesmo afirmar que foi um instrumento poderoso de criação desse "mundo" na consciência das partes. Frequentemente foi o único lugar público onde puderam intervir – de forma legal ou clandestina, nos países de origem, na emigração ou no exílio – os agentes que se moviam no campo da cultura literária, elemento poderoso de afirmação cultural e política da modernidade. Em ambientes de maior liberdade ou repressão, dependendo do tempo e do espaço, e enquadrados por relações de poder/subalternização, intervieram para expor e debater ideias, designadamente colonialistas e anticolonialistas, escrutinar o poder e os seus agentes, publicar a sua produção literária e artística, afirmar identidades, solidariedades e resistências. Por outro lado, nesta imprensa encontramos dados que interessam ao conhecimento de matérias tão díspares como a evolução dos climas locais, ciclos económicos, práticas sociais e culturais, políticas públicas, movimentos populacionais, etc, de elevada importância científica, económica e cultural actual, como vem sendo reconhecido por especialistas de diversas áreas.

Os promotores e parceiros do Congresso entendem este legado como património de todos os países envolvidos pois a todos envolve. É um desígnio democrático do GIEIPC-IP incentivar a cooperação institucional nacional (dentro de cada país) e internacional na recuperação, preservação e acesso público comum desse património, em condições equitativas, reconhecendo as responsabilidades do mundo académico nesse campo. O Grupo está consciente que as desigualdades internacionais de mobilidade e de acesso às fontes que permitem criar conhecimento no campo das Ciências Sociais e Humanas contribuem poderosamente, a par do mercado de validação do conhecimento criado, para as hierarquias académicas internacionais com impacto significativo em todas as sociedades.

A Exposição Virtual Comum foi um projecto promovido e concebido pela Comissão Organizadora do primeiro Congresso Internacional do GIEIPC-IP (Lisboa, 22-25 Maio de 2017), “Política e Cultura na Imprensa Periódica Colonial” e seus parceiros, a partir da ideia lançada por Alfredo Caldeira de se criar uma exposição virtual. A Comissão Organizadora propôs que fosse concebida como Comum envolvendo os investigadores, projectos e instituições que apoiam o Grupo de Estudos e as bibliotecas e arquivos participantes do Congresso através dos seus especialistas, muitos com longa experiência de projectos colaborativos. Em 2022, devido à disponibilidade da Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, é acrescentada pela cópia digital da sua colecção microfilmada da “Gazeta de Goa”, publicada entre 1821 e 1826, o primeiro jornal colonial do império português fora de Portugal e do Brasil. Assinala-se assim esse marco na história da imprensa em língua portuguesa, por ocasião do segundo Congresso do GIEIPC-IP em Lisboa, “O Liberalismo e a Imprensa Colonial” (21-22 Setembro 2022). Common Virtual Exhibition

The Common Virtual Exhibition aims to evidence the importance of Libraries, Archives and Researchers thinking cooperatively research, preservation and accessibility to collections of colonial periodical press, in national and international terms. Reflection and positioning that the Organization considers important enough to dedicate a day of the Congress to an "Encounter Libraries, Archives and Researchers: an international debate" around the key-idea "common virtual archive".

Regarding present safeguard and access, reality offers a panorama of titles difficult to detect, collections in advanced state of deterioration due to the fragility of paper and other constrains. Surviving collections urge to be mapped, as they are frequently dispersed in different countries, institutions and private owners, most of them being incomplete. The extreme fragility, dispersion, deficient knowledge of these collections and even the invisibility of such archive in most institutional catalogs, offer a particular sense to act cooperatively, when individual resources to address such panorama are notoriously limited. The idea is to optimize such resources and find solutions to study, preserve, unite and virtually restitute to each space patrimonies that may be recognized as regarding each space and common to all spaces.

It should be acknowledged that in periodical press (newspapers, magazines, reviews, bulletins, etc) it is reflected and intellectually build a significant part of the contemporary history of the countries that until their political independence were part of the "colonial world" (metropole, colonies) created by the Portuguese empire. Such evaluation may be applied to the spaces where it could flourish and, by omission that ought to be addressed, to those where it could not develop. We may affirm with security that it was a powerful instrument of creation of such "world" in the consciousness of its parts. Frequently it was the only public place where could intervene – in legal or clandestine form, in their homeland countries, in migration or in exile – the agents that moved in the field of literary culture, powerful element of cultural and political affirmation of modernity. Amidst more liberal or repressive ambiances, depending on the moment and space, and framed by relations of power/subalternization, these agents have intervened to share and debate ideas, namely colonialist and anticolonial, to scrutinize the colonial power and its agents, to publish their literary and artistic production, to affirm identities, solidarities and resistances. In a different approach, it is recognized by academics from different fields, that in this press one may find relevant data to long-term approaches to matters as different as the evolution of local climates, economic cycles, social and cultural practices, public politics, movement of populations, etc, of high scientific, economic, cultural relevance.

The promotors and partner of the Congress consider this legacy as a patrimony of all countries involved as it involves all of them. It is a democratic determination of GIEIPC-IP to incentivize institutional national (within each country) and international cooperation in the recovery, preservation and common public access to this patrimony, in equitable terms, recognizing the responsibilities of the academic world in this field. The Group is aware that the international inequalities of mobility and access to information sources that allow to create knowledge in the field of Social and Human Sciences powerfully contribute, along with the market of validation of the knowledge generated, to the international academic hierarchies, with significant impact in all societies.

The Common Virtual Exhibition is a project promoted and conceived by the Organizing Committee of the Congress and its partners, after an idea launched by Alfredo Caldeira to create a virtual exhibition. The Organizing Committee proposed that it should be conceived as common involving the researchers, institutions and projects that support IGSCP-PE and the libraries and archives that participate in the Congress through their specialists, many of them with a large experience of collaborative projects. Most of them corresponded positively under a high stress of time, allowing the preparation of the Exhibition to actually incentivize an institutional consciousness of such patrimony and to advance our knowledge regarding some collections. The intention was never to present the "most important" press published in each space but to evidence the diversity of situations and, above all, to test the practical effects of a collaborative positioning.
